Straight-Path Communications

\"\" GG-21 Builder Communication

Communication must be a straight path between you and your builder. Never relay any information through a third party because there’s no way for you to know to an absolute certainty that the information has been delivered accurately. Whether you are presenting plans, files, ideas, specifications, or a complaint, do it directly with your builder.

If you are serving as your own contractor – not a good idea for unskilled, non-professionals – the same straight-path policy applies to every sub-contractor involved. Talk directly to everyone. Get direct replies from all.

Even if someone offers, “I’ll tell the builder for you,” or “I’ll handle that for you,” it is imperative that you maintain full knowledge and control over every word spoken, and action taken, on your behalf. You are accountable, so remain in control in all things.

Attempting to communicate indirectly will, at best, lead to less than satisfactory results; at worst, catastrophic failure of part or all of the project.
